JESUS VISITS ZACCHAEUS
He entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 There was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. 3 He was trying to see who Jesus was, but he was not able because of the crowd, since he was a short man. 4 So running ahead, he climbed up a sycamore tree to see Jesus, since He was about to pass that way. 5 When Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down because today I must stay at your house.”
6 So he quickly came down and welcomed Him joyfully. Luke 19: 1-6
Before entering the ministry, I became friends with the pastor of a Hispanic church in Tijuana, Mexico – Pastor Fernando. He was in need of food - not only for his congregation, but for the surrounding neighborhoods as well.
I toured these neighborhoods and, suffice it to say, I saw that the poverty was unbelievable. I visited one family whose home had only one beat-up metal chair as their entire furniture collection. Food was cooked on the floor and eaten while standing or while sitting on the floor; and of course, sleeping took place on the dirt floor as well.
We had access to several truckloads of food, and we were able to help that community.
On one occasion, Pastor Fernando asked me a very peculiar question. He asked me if I would come the next Sunday and preach to his congregation of about 450 people. My answer was swift and to the point: “I'm not a preacher.”
Well, he didn't take “No.” for an answer, and, since I had my own company, He asked me to come and speak about how God had helped me in my business. I accepted the invitation, and that started the spark which would change my whole life.
I recall telling his congregation that, without Christ, there is no success in business - that only He can bring about true contentment – no matter what job you do every day.
As soon as the service was over, Fernando asked me to come back in a month and speak about Zacchaeus. Again, I said, “No, no, no, I'm not a preacher.” He replied, “I'll see you in four weeks.”
I did go back the following month and speak about Zacchaeus. The message seemed to minister to the people in that congregation, and for the next three years, I kept going back once a month until I enrolled in a seminary-like program at my own church, which kept me from going to the church in Tijuana - as our classes were held on Sundays.
At the end of my monthly trips to that church, my friend prayed for me without ceasing, and loved me just the way I was.
Because of my friend's encouragement, I shared the Word of God with his congregation. It opened new and unexpected doors of opportunity for me to share the Gospel.
Like Zacchaeus, (the dishonest tax collector), all of us are sinners. In addition, you don't have to be a guest at the Door of Hope Mission to experience depression, addiction, or deep loneliness. You could be a homemaker doing the daily task of taking care of a husband and children – a husband working hard without finding satisfaction in his job – a student who is questioning what this life is all about – someone wondering if life is worth living – or even a pastor who permits himself to lose focus, rather than trusting God in every situation.
I want to encourage you - as Zacchaeus did - to go out of your comfort zone, and make the extra effort to really SEE Jesus...to climb that tree to see Him...to study the Bible and let the Lord speak to you. He WILL see you, and - like He did with Zacchaeus - He will come and “stay at your house with you.” I hope you will trust Him today – giving yourself to Him so that He can use you.
He might even give you opportunities that you never anticipated. He can definitely give you peace during this life and the security of spending eternity with Him.

A Word From Pastor Michael
Greetings in the magnificent name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!
We are about to engage in our 3rd study here at Door of Hope. We will be working through “Understanding Biblical Doctrine”. Even though this is a 13 lesson study, we can see how it may take more than 13 weeks to get through it. However, we want to extend an invitation to any of you who might like to join us for this study. We meet at 7 P.M. on Wednesday nights at the Mission. The cost of the study book is $10.00. Please pray about joining us.
It is Pastor Andrew's and my responsibility to fulfill our obligations found in Ephesians 4:11-16. We don't simply feed and clothe the least of these, but we seek to "establish" those who are believers more firmly in the faith. We also have the great privilege of sharing the Good News with the unbeliever and the trembling Christian. We really solicit your regular prayer as we seek to fulfill our calling. It is your support, both spiritual and material, that is such a great blessing and encouragement! We are both grateful for and humbled by your support.
