A Word From Our Director ~ Pastor Andrew Pistone

We continue to see God working in the lives of the people who come to the Door of Hope Mission.  Many of our guests come to us experiencing anxiety, depression, and utter confusion; but after they spend time in the Word of God, and trust Him with their lives and their future…..we see God weaving Himself into their lives - and then we see transformation.
Many of their circumstances are challenging, and the work is difficult – but it is rewarding.

I'm guessing that some of you are also experiencing unnecessary anxiety while you are in God's “Waiting Room,” and I am hoping that the following article written by Lesly McKenzie will encourage you during the waiting process.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7

Story by Lesly McKenzie

What are you hoping for today? Healing? We all need some sort of healing on any given day. Good news? Maybe you're waiting to hear from the doctor, a friend or a loved one.  Is it a promotion, a breakthrough, a reconciliation, or a relaxing day? Maybe you're hoping for these things for a loved one.  Walking alongside a friend or family member who is struggling, or suffering can be excruciating, and maybe your hope tank needs a refill. Whatever it is, it's important to you. It's probably seared on your heart and always on the edge of your mind.  It may give you that spring in your step or ability to
take one more step because maybe, today's the day! If it's been there a long time, you may start to wonder if what you're hoping for is ever going to happen at all. Sometimes the longer it lingers unanswered, hope can begin to fade. Whatever you may be struggling with today remember that Romans 5:3-4 tells us, “…we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.”

Suffering – Perseverance – Character – Hope

It seems like a long road to take. Sometimes it's longer than we think we can endure, but it's always worth it in the end. I love how God's faithfulness and goodness can be seen in His creation. Looking at the agave plant shows us a picture of the sweet reward of endurance.   We all probably know that the key to a superior product is the ingredients. This is standard across the board, from the food we eat to the medicines we trust.  Turns out, the agave plant is the key to creating some of the finest culinary products we enjoy. You would think that the prime plant would be the sweetest, smoothest or most beautiful one in the field, but this is not the case at all. What makes the plant unique and ready to use is its level of maturity. For one particular process the maturation takes roughly 20 years.  In order for the agave to reach the point of ultimate harvest for refining, this hearty plant must endure seasons of sun, rain and drought. This plant is in it for the long haul.  The chosen ones have endured through the blistering heat, heavy rains and been deprived of water. The hard seasons produce not just your everyday coffee sweetener, but the best of the best ingredients used in impeccable end products.

The duration of our own struggles, although seemingly impossible to withstand at times, can produce the same sweetness in our own hearts and lives.  The endurance, patience and suffering are creating character in us that will bear hope. God is molding the pieces of our stories to be harvested and used for His glory. Much like us, “the experiences that each individual agave plant has had in its lifetime will ultimately affect the finished product. The unique chemical properties of the agave are out of this world because they must fight for survival.  The “sweetness” they produce is a product of chemical weapons developed over time to fight back against predators who are after the sugar and water they are able to hold in the midst of scarcity.”

Suffering – Perseverance – Character – Hope

Amid our own struggles, God is bringing out not just the good stuff, but the best of the best. He knows the outcome and is playing the long game. So, don't let whatever circumstance you are battling today steal the sweet reward that is coming. Hold fast to your hope and remember that our ultimate hope is for Heaven.  We're counting the days to summer at my house, and my kids' favorite summer camp has a slogan that sums up hope better than I can:

“Today Camp Thurman, Someday Heaven!”

So, fill in the blank with whatever's in front of you, good or bad, and let's get our perspective re-aligned.

Today , Someday Heaven!

If you're feeling exceptionally bold, comment and share what you put in the blank. Let someone know they're not alone, and you might even discover that you aren't either!

“Wait and hope for and expect the Lord; be brave and of good courage and let your heart be stout and enduring. Yes, wait for and hope for and expect the Lord.”  Psalm 27:14
