A CHRISTIAN MISSION
June 2017 Newsletter
A Word From Our Director ~ Pastor Andrew Pistone
"And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven will also forgive you your wrongdoing. But if you don't forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your wrongdoing." Mark 11:25-26
At the Mission, we have several guests who have had to deal with wrongdoings that happened years ago in their lives. Because they haven't known how to handle these hurts in God's way, many of them turned to addictions to find temporary relief from their pain.
One of our guests was violently raped years ago, and the damage to her body was so severe that she needed surgery. I asked her if she had forgiven her perpetrator, and her Christian answer was, “Of course.”
I followed up with, “So, you are willing to meet him in heaven and give him a big hug?” Her answer was, “Absolutely not.”
Obviously, I can't comprehend her pain at all, but the verse above doesn't give us a qualifier. Even if we have experienced overwhelming pain at the hands of others, we still are told to forgive – even if the offender doesn't ask for forgiveness, or we don't think they deserve to be forgiven.
God wants us to trust Him and wants us to live an abundant life. When we do things our own way, we forfeit the abundant life of freedom and peace that God offers to us. It begins with faith and trust in Him, and obedience to His Word.
We all have been hurt, and we all have hurt others in one way or another. If we have put our faith and trust in Christ as our Savior and Lord, we have received God's forgiveness for all our wrongdoings. Let us forgive one another, just as Christ has forgiven us.
A Word From Pastor Michael
I'm excited to share that we just completed our study in The Purple Book, which covers the fundamental teachings of our faith. I am so very pleased at the level of participation and the enthusiasm shown for this study. It got us all on the same page and provides a great foundation upon which to build.
Our next endeavor is Growing in Christ, published by NavPress (the Navigators.) Patti and I have used the Navigator's materials for years, and have found them to be excellent material for the new and mature believer alike.
Like The Purple Book, this is a 13 week study, but it covers more personal issues - like The Assurance of Salvation, Assurance of Victory, as well as Love and God's Word, and The Church. It is a more intense study, and demands a lot more reflection than The Purple Book. It also has a memory verse that applies to each lesson, and successful completion of the study requires that memory work be done. There is a solid and high level of enthusiasm for this study as we move forward.
YOU are making a difference - a big difference - in the lives of men and women you may never meet. You are making it possible for them to grow in the Lord as they heal in Him. It is such a wondrous and humbling thing to see how God uses you to work in their lives. Were it not for you and your faithfulness, we would not dare embark on such a grand journey.
We have great plans for the training program here at Door of Hope, and pray that you will continue to support us with your giving and your prayers. Oh - class is on Wednesday nights at 7:00 PM, and we'd welcome any of you who would like to join us, to just drop by for a visit.
May God richly bless you as you serve Him.
Verses of the Month
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. Ephesians 6:18
