A CHRISTIAN MISSION
February 2017 Newsletter
A Word From Our Director ~ Pastor Andrew Pistone
It's an honor to serve the Lord among people with difficult life issues, because, as we see in Scripture - God used sinners - folks just like us - to do great things for His Kingdom.
This is just a short list of people who were used by God - despite their disadvantages and their imperfections.
· Abraham - Was old.
· Elijah - Was suicidal.
· Joseph - Was abused.
· Job - Went bankrupt.
· Moses - Had a speech problem.
· Gideon - Was afraid.
· Samson – Was a womanizer.
· Rahab - Was a prostitute.
· Samaritan Woman – Was divorced.
· Noah - Was a drunk.
· Jeremiah - Was young.
· Jacob - Was a cheater.
· David - Was a murderer.
· Jonah - Ran from God.
· Naomi - Was a widow.
· Peter - Denied Christ three times.
· Martha - Worried about everything.
· Zacchaeus - Was small and money hungry.
· The Disciples - Fell asleep while praying.
· Paul – Was a Pharisee who persecuted Christians before becoming one.
Throughout Scripture, we see God using imperfect people to accomplish His purposes. Don't allow your imperfections to limit how God will use your future for Him.
If you ever feel like you aren't worthy enough, remember that Jesus used a bunch of flawed people to share Hope with a flawed world. In HIM, we find renewal and mending. Jesus didn't call the equipped, He equipped the called; and no matter what you've been through in life, remember that the same Power that conquered the grave - lives within you if you are a follower of Christ.
Some time ago, I featured John Barragan in our newsletter. He is my friend and has been a guest at the Door of Hope. He diligently took on the challenging task of placing door hangers on the front doors of countless homes in Odessa. (These were advertisements for our Thrift Store.) He spent endless hours walking from house to house, and he made that time of work – also a time of prayer. As he placed a door hanger on the front door of each home, he prayed for the people who lived in those homes.
John has experienced a changed life through Christ, and he wants everybody to experience that same peace and joy.
Last year, John had to face some consequences that resulted from his old life. He had to appear before a judge who could have sentenced him to 20 years in prison. Instead – God intervened, and his sentence was reduced to 2 years. John has served a little more than seven months of that two year sentence.
On the day of his sentencing – I whispered in John's ear that I was confident that there were inmates who will be impacted by his testimony upon his arrival.
I'm glad to report that John has been faithful in his commitment to Christ. During this period when he is serving his time, he says that he has perfect peace. He knows that God can use him, as he shares the story of his changed life.
I visit John quite often, and we took this picture during one of our visits.
John Barragan recently wrote the following:
The Lord reminded Samuel that it was not his physical appearance or his ability that He wanted - but rather, his heart. 1 Samuel 16:7
It's the same for us. God only asks for our humble and willing hearts. It is not how you look or how smart, talented or strong you are. The world's labels don't matter to Him. What matters is that you are willing. God can, and will use the weakest and most broken among us to accomplish His greatest plan. You have been called. Are you available?
